Thinking about adding a bunny to your family?

Are rabbits a good pet for kids? This is a very common question. At Kristy’s Studio our most requested props are our 2 resident bunnies, Holly and Nala! Kids absolutely LOVE meeting them and learning about bunnies…and updating us constantly about their every movement! “Now they are eating” “ One has gone to sleep” “Nala just bit Holly’s bottom”

Parents often tell us that they are thinking about getting a pet bunny for their kids or ask us if rabbits are a good pet for kids – so we thought we might take this moment to give you some fun bunny facts!

If you’re thinking about getting a rabbit as a pet, there are a few things you should know! While bunnies are incredibly cute and cuddly, they also require special care and attention.

Rabbits are delicate creatures that require gentle handling. It’s important to carry them properly, supporting their back legs and avoiding any sudden movements. They can also be easily injured by rough play or accidental drops, so young children should always be supervised when interacting with a rabbit.

In addition, rabbits can be prone to a number of health issues, including dental problems, gastrointestinal stasis, and respiratory infections. These conditions can develop quickly and require immediate veterinary attention, so it’s important to monitor your bunny’s health closely and seek medical care at the first sign of a problem.

They can still make great pets for the right family. They are social animals that love to play and snuggle, and they can even be trained to use a litter box and perform tricks! Just be sure to do your research, provide proper care and attention, and always put your bunny’s health and safety first.

Here are 15 fun facts about rabbits that are sure to put a smile on your face!

1. Rabbits can jump up to 3 times their own height

Did you know that rabbits can jump up to three times their own height? That means if you were a rabbit, you could jump over a basketball hoop with ease! This also means that Nala could easily jump out of their enclosure…shhhh don’t tell her!

2. They love to play with toys

Rabbits are social animals that love to play with toys and run around in open spaces. You can even teach your pet rabbit to play games like fetch or hide-and-seek! Nala’s favourite game currently is throwing toys into the water bowl – haha.
Speaking of toys, bunnies NEVER put their toys away. You think stepping on a Lego is bad…wait until you step on one of these bad boys!

3. Keen sense of smell

Bunnies have a keen sense of smell, and they use it to find food and detect danger. Their noses are so sensitive that they can even smell their favourite foods from far away. Except for Holly…she sometimes can’t find her food cause she is standing on it!

4. Unique communication

Rabbits have a unique way of communicating with each other. They use a combination of body language, vocalizations, and even thumping their hind legs to send messages to their friends.

5. 49 pounds!

The Guinness World Record for the largest rabbit ever is held by a bunny named Darius, who weighs a whopping 49 pounds!
That, my friends, is 22 KILOS!
He is a beauty – check him out here.
My biggest bun to date has been Bo and he weighed in at 9kgs.

6. Bunnies have a superpower

They can move each ear independently, allowing them to keep an eye out for predators while still focusing on their food or play.

7. Their teeth never stop growing

Rabbits have 28 teeth, and their teeth never stop growing. To keep them from getting too long, they need to gnaw on things like hay or wooden toys.

8. They can GLOW!

Some rabbits have a genetic mutation that causes their fur to glow under black light! This mutation is called “uvula gigantea” and is harmless to the rabbit.

9. Bugs Bunny was real

The famous cartoon character Bugs Bunny was actually based on a real-life rabbit named Clark Gable, who was owned by a Warner Bros. animator.

If a rabbit feels happy or content, they may do a little dance called a binky! This involves jumping up in the air and twisting their body in mid-air.

12. Mmmmm ….poop

Bunnies have a special digestive system that allows them to eat their own poop! This may sound gross, but it’s actually a natural part of their diet that helps them extract all the nutrients from their food. They also cannot vomit!

13. Rabbits are fast runners

They can reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour! This makes them one of the fastest animals in the world relative to their body size.

Some rabbits have long, floppy ears that can help regulate their body temperature. When they get hot, they can use their ears to cool off by increasing blood flow to the vessels in their ears.
